Finding a partner: filters, shortlist and interests

How to use search, filters, the shortlist and interests to find the right person — and when and how to involve your family.

1.Questions to ask yourself first

  • Which 3–4 things matter most to me? (e.g. religious practice, education, family values)
  • Where can I be flexible? (e.g. district, height)
  • What does my family want, and what do I want — do they match?

2.Using search and filters

Start with a few filters, then add more gradually. With too many filters you may get no results at all.

FilterWhen it helps
Age and heightThe first filter for almost everyone
Division and districtIf you want to marry within a particular area
Education and occupationIf you want a similar level of education or occupation
Religious practiceIf prayer, modest dress and so on matter to you
Verified onlyFor extra assurance — we recommend keeping it on
Managed byTo find profiles managed by a guardian
The “Boosted” profiles at the top of the search have used points to appear higher for a while. Judge for yourself whether a profile suits you.

3.Assessing a profile

  • Read the whole profile; don't decide from the photo alone
  • Check the verified badge and the education certificate status
  • Compare the family information and expectations with your own
  • If in doubt, ask questions or show it to your family

4.Shortlist and family discussion

Click the bookmark icon to add profiles you like to your shortlist. Then download or print the PDF from the “Biodata” section of the profile page, show it to your parents or guardian and ask their opinion. The biodata contains only the information you can see on the profile.

5.Etiquette for sending interest

Do

  • Write a short, polite message beginning with salaam
  • Say what you liked about the profile
  • Be patient while waiting for a reply

Don't

  • Don't send interest to the same person again and again
  • Don't ask personal questions or for a number in your first message
  • If they say no, don't try to reach them another way

6.What to learn in conversation

  • Both of your life goals and religious commitment
  • Where you will live after marriage, and career plans
  • Family expectations and responsibilities
  • Children and plans for the future
If money, gifts, an OTP or bank details come up, stop the conversation and report it.

7.Family meeting

1
Exchange guardians' numbers

Once a contact request is approved, the two families talk directly.

2
Check the details

Make the usual enquiries about education, occupation and family.

3
First meeting

With family present, in a public or family setting.

4
Decision

No rush — decide after istikhara and consultation.
